Ways To Increase Your Savings

June 15th, 2011

Saving money needs to be a priority for many people whether it is to help you reach your financial goals, or just to help you make ends meet each month. Learn some cost cutting ways to use your money wisely.

Make Homemade Gifts Instead of Buying

Instead of blowing your hard earned money on gifts for birthdays or holidays, you might consider making your own homemade gifts for your family and friends. Not only is this cheaper than buying gifts, it allows you to use your creative side to make something unique and meaningful for your loved ones. Homemade gifts are often more thoughtful than purchasing gifts.

Invite Friends Over Instead of Going Out

If you're one who likes spending time with your friends, consider inviting your friends over for an evening at your home rather than going out. Instead of going to the movies invite people over to watch a movie in the comfort of your own home. Making microwave popcorn to enjoy during the flick is a whole lot cheaper than buying a tub of popcorn at the theater.

Limit What You Spend On Entertainment.

Instead of going to the movie theater or renting movies from a video rental store, stay in and watch a movie at home. If you must rent a movie, rent from Redbox. A one night rental only costs $1. You might also consider downgrading your cable package and subscribing to Netflix instead. For a low monthly fee, you get unlimited video streaming either to your computer or to your television if you have a Wii or Xbox Live. DVDs are sent directly to your home.

If you are someone who enjoys reading, rather than spending money on buying a book, see if your local library has it. Most libraries also let you check out movies and Cd's. Next time you find yourself wanting to make a trip to your local mall, take a trip to the library instead, and you'll find yourself saving a bundle. After all, you can't beat free!

Buy Generic Instead of Name Brands.

This is a trick our mothers and grandmothers used before us, and now it's our turn to save. Next time you're in the store and find yourself pulling a name-brand product off the shelf, stop. Put it back. Search for the generic version of the product instead. Generic items are usually identical to the name brands, but are less expensive. Rather than burning holes in your pockets for a brand name, invest in the generic brand of the product. Soda, medicine, household items and even grocery items can all be purchased for an inexpensive price. If you forego the brand name on the product's label. So next time you find yourself shopping, skip over the name brands and head straight for generic. Your wallet will thank you!

There are many ways to cut corners without taking all the fun out of life. If you're careful and spend wisely, you can still enjoy life, and begin saving money for what you really want.
